Game Master - Character design by Rob Shields, created for Gun Metal Games’ Interface Zero 2.0 Full Metal Cyberpunk
The Strogg are an antagonistic alien race depicted in the Quake franchise. Their insignia plays a cameo in the original Quake, while the Strogg themselves serve as antagonists in Quake 2 and Quake 4. Though the series itself offers little in the way of classic cyberpunk themes, the Strogg themselves are perhaps the epitome of technology completely overtaking its creators.
It’s unclear if the Strogg ever possessed a natural, living form before they became what they are. What we know is that they are a species that has been heavily modified with cybernetics. Entire limbs and sections of the body are often replaced and augmented, and in extreme cases so much has been augmented that it is not evident that the construct was ever a living thing. Their planet, Stroggos, is a barren wasteland. While the atmosphere is described as “harsh, but breathable”, the planet itself harbors no meaningful plant or animal life. Natural resources have been mined out, and the only confirmed source of natural life ever found on the planet are vicious, mutated animals, the byproduct of what the Strogg have done to the planet.
The Strogg do not reproduce naturally. They replenish their numbers by waging war with other races. Captured enemies are forcibly ‘Stroggified’ - a horrific process in which living people are augmented with cybernetics, and have neural implants installed to force them into the Strogg hivemind. It is at this point that the victim loses all control of his or her body, and is forced to watch himself wage war against his allies until his higher brain functions atrophy. If enemy soldiers are killed in battle, their bodies are taken by the Strogg, to be broken down into a slurry of pure enzymes called Stroyent. This is what the Strogg use as food and lubricant.
Non militaristic parts of Strogg society are sketchy. Some sources indicate that higher ranking members of the Strogg have some semblance of autonomy, and even war with each other. Other sources imply that the Strogg are all part of one collective hivemind, controlled by a nexus core. The Strogg are led by a military commander known as the Makron - this is a title, not a name. Adding to how little we know, some sources indicate that the Makron is chosen through combative competition, implying autonomy amongst the higher ranks. However, when the Makron was destroyed in the events of Quake 2, the new Makron was built specifically for the purpose of taking the title, and immediately appointed without any conflict. This implies a collective hivemind, though it could also simply be the result of having very little time to appoint a new leader.
The events of Quake 4 conclusively showed that there was indeed a nexus core, and destroying it did indeed render seemingly the entire Strogg force inert. But we do not know if that was truly everyone. The existence of other nexus cores is not implausible.
Whatever the case, it is obvious that the Strogg did not evolve into a cybernetic race naturally. It is possible that they were created as a weapon that may or may not have consumed their creators, but it is also possible that the Strogg willingly did this to themselves. Or perhaps it was a mixture of both, in that augmentation of their original bodies came to a point of no return, and through a virus, government corruption, militaristic force, or extremist revolution, what was once a race of individuals became the Strogg we know today.

I was personally always a fan of the theory that the Strogg are humans from the future.

Been doing a lot of cyberpunk stuff in my sketchbook for future projects and wanted to flesh one of them out. Not sure what’s going on color-wise, just trying out different stuff.
